A digital signature is an electronic form of authentication that provides integrity, non-repudiation, and authentication of a digital message or document. It is the digital equivalent of a handwritten signature or a stamped seal, but with added security measures to ensure its authenticity.
A digital signature is created using a cryptographic algorithm and a unique private key only the signer can access. When a document is signed using a digital signature, the algorithm generates a unique code, known as a hash, which is then encrypted using the signer’s private key. The encrypted hash is attached to the document, creating a digital signature that can be verified by anyone with access to the signer’s public key.
Digital signatures are widely used in business and government transactions to ensure the authenticity and integrity of digital documents. They provide a higher level of security than traditional handwritten signatures or physical seals, as they cannot be easily forged or tampered with.

A DSC is an electronic format of a physical signature that verifies the identity of the signer and the integrity of the signed document. It is issued by a Certifying Authority (CA) and is used to sign documents electronically.
There are three types of DSCs – Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. Class 1 is used for basic-level authentication, Class 2 is used for company filings and e-tendering, and Class 3 is used for high-value transactions and e-auctions.
A DSC is valid for a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years. After the expiry, it needs to be renewed to continue using it.
No, a DSC is issued to a specific individual or entity and cannot be shared. However, multiple signatures can be applied to a single document using different DSCs.
In case of loss or compromise of the private key or any other security breach, a DSC can be revoked by the owner or the issuing CA. The revocation request needs to be submitted in writing with proper authentication and verification.
